I used to have a B5 A4 and it was a little expensive to maintain, but not unreasonable..

Default Do you DIY? For the past 18K miles, all out of warranty>>

my TT has been pretty reasonable except for 1) the driveshaft CV & center support bearing failing, totally a fluke I think. Parts were about $300. 2) the ABS control module dying (I haven't bothered to replace yet). I think this part will cost about $250.

My waterpump started to leak around 57K miles and though it was frustrating, I'd already planned to replace it at 60K, so this just made me do it a tad early.

I've been lucky in that the instrument cluster hasn't died yet (knock on wood) because that's the one major expense that is a common failure item on these cars. I'm sure it will happen though-- I've already seen some anomalies with mine.

Default I can DIY basic things

this is one reason I'm interested in the certified cars, little extra coverage to make sure the cluster is okay, etc.

Default I have 45k miles of out of warranty, heavy mod experience>>>

and find the TT to be very reliable and fairly inexpensive to maintain for a sports car....i am used to Porsche $$$ to maintain...so my perspective is a little tilted. Others have said its expensive to maintain.
Bottom line, is if you expect Honda reliability...then you will be very disappointed...but if you have experience with Porsche or some other high end sports car...then you will be nicely surprised...IMO

Default errr..... costs are the same at my wife's VW shop.... labor rates seem to be across the board

nowadays.... whether it's at the dealer or at a "tuner", all seem to be the same regardless of brand.

Default do you know of any problem areas around 50k?

think its worth getting an extended warranty (or audi certified) to cover that stuff? I've heard of CV related items going, and clusters around then. I know i'll be out a bunch for the timing belt.

Default There is no one specific thing>>>

and that's the problem...its like trying to predict the future. I do know this, if the car has been reliable, and fairly problem free, and you maintain religously, then more than likely, that will continue throughout most of its life.

I had my cluster replaced around 45k miles....then it went south again at 85k....my failure is related to the temp gauge, so i have chosen to not immediately replace it.

Other than that, change the oil every 5k with synthetic, change the haldex fluid every 20k...and still to an aggressive maintanence schedule, and it will keep it fun!

Default cool

I'll just make sure the cluster is replaced under warranty, and try to negotiate on the fact that i'll have to pay for the timing belt.
