What are signs of instrument cluster going bad??
My TT was about on empty yesterday, all of suddent the gas gauge jumped to full and showed I could go 330 miles.
I stopped at the pump and then the needle jumped back to empty.
I pumped in 15.5 gal. of gas.
A couple days prior I had a CEL that was lit, and then went out by itself, yet my VAG-COM showed 2 issues.
Are these signs of a pending bad instrument cluster?
My TT has 42K on it and I want to document this so if it does fail post warranty period I can still get it covered.

Re: What are signs of instrument cluster going bad??
You got the signs, I had the same problem last year, eventually the whole cluster would flash off and on, messing up all the settings. I live in a cold area and the problem increased as it got colder. Dealer replaced the instrument pod. I talked to the mechanic and it is a common problem with the 2000-2001 models (doesn't mean it happens to everyone).

my first cluster replace was from fuel gauge acting flukey- It would...
bounce or start out on E with the low fuel light activating. It would then bounce between correct and E with no particular pattern. Fuel sending rods were replaced and the gauge read completely backwards so cluster was replaced which fixed it. About a year later the tack and speedo started bouncing all over the place with periodic normal readings. Often the cluster would go completely dead with no readings or lights. I used climate control for data. So far everything is OK. I would have dealer diagnose cluster and get a complaint registered so the "sporadic" complaint will be documented.

General flakyness - my tach would take 4 - 5 seconds to "wake up" in the morning...
It would read 0 for the first few seconds after starting the car, then would "wake up."
That was enough to get me a new cluster...

Clock and date were incorrect
I noticed that my time and date were incorrect. I reset them and they seemed to work fine. When I took my car in for its annual state inspection, I mentioned this to my dealer service advisor. They checked out the instrument cluster, said it was bad, and then replaced it - no questions asked.
