What triggers the airbags? Are sensors located near the front and sides of the TT? How fast ...

Also the weight of the driver has an input into the airbag deploy characteristics
My Air bad warning light came on... It was the chip in the seat belt buckle that senses driver weight that had failed. (At least that's what they told me)

I don't know where they are located but I've heard
some companies use a magnet with a specified magnetic strength and a steel ball that makes an electrical connection. When the ball separates from the magnet the airbag deploys.
steel ball --> O) <-- magnet
on impact.....
O<--)
I'm sure there are many other inputs and this design is probably out of date. There are probably DSPs that monitor accelorometers in today's cars. Just my $0.02. :-p
