Default What would a turbo charger going bad sound like?

I am hearing noises...like this: https://forums.audiworld.com/tt/threads/423926.phtml#1479643

I have since determined that the sounds definately seem to be coming from the left side of the engine comparment (when sitting in the car). Also, recording the noise has not been successful as the mic is not clear enough.

Can anyone describe what kind of noises a turbo charger going bad would make?

Thanks.

Default are u referring to the "flutter" type of sound>>>

KO4's are pretty strong...you may want to check all the hoses...IMO

Default the sound quality of the recording wasnt that great.

but I 2nd loose hoses.

also it sounded like he was revving in neutral - when good turboes start going bad, you hear the high speed drill noise only at full boost, then later the noise accompanies you thru the spool range.

b5s4s - home of the turbo lady.

Default Hahaha! That cracked me up.

But seriously, your turbo didn't make any unusual noises?

Default Yes the flutter

Actually there are two versions of the flutter - one light and breathy and the other a little harsher and harder (like metal).

I will try to replace the DV's diaphram and check all hoses and clamps. Thanks.

Default Granted the sound wasn't good, I'll post another

This recording is while driving. Again the quality is pretty shoddy, but that is the best my phone can do.

And thanks for the info on the turbo lady ;-) I am now hopefull that the turbo is not dying on me. Thanks.

Edit: Sorry I know this recording is quite long, but there are three of four point where the sound of the flutter is quite obvious.

Default GT28R (dual ball bearings)- sounded OK- But Wastegate was literally fried during waterpump failure.

Turbine spun a bit slower, though.

Default one problem solved

the dvr diaphram had a large chunk missing. replaced it and also cleaned TTDA filter and the light flutter disappeared. however, the other heavier, more mechanical sound is still there. i tried to check all of the hoses and everything seems fine except that one of the clamps into the top of the DVR is missing completely. of course, dealer says its not needed, but i need to shop around for one that fits.

one thing I can say after replacing the diaphram and cleaning the filter (and trimming the hoses under the wheel arch) - the sound of the turbo is much louder now. i must remember to not let the filter go so long between cleanings.

thanks again for the feedback of the forum. i'll post another recording of the heavier sound to see if anyone can help point me in the right direction.
