My 01 225 is not shifting properly into 1,2 and reverse. So, when I went to reset the shift linkage under the hood I found this thing (picture attached) - some sort of cap - just sitting down there near the shifting mechanism.

Can anyone tell me what it is?

Thanks

SOLVED: Actually in posting the pic I noticed there's a number on it. I just washed it off and blew up a new pic. I used the number to google it. It's the timing hole plug.
I wonder what issues could be caused by this being off.

Mine did did the same once about 10 years back. Just plug it back into the timing hole in the bellhousing. Scares you when it falls into the shift linkage doesn’t it,

Can you explain what you mean by reset the shift linkage? Did it work? Thanks!

Follow the procedure in the service manual. Purchase it if you don't already have it.

I have the Bentley manual and can't find anything about resetting the shift linkage. I have a section about adjusting the linkage so maybe just a misunderstanding on my part about the terminology, but bottom line is I have tried adjusting the linkage and still have hard shifts into 1st and reverse.

Sounds like either a clutch nearing the end of its life or a broken shift fork.
