Default wheel bearing concern?

I have been getting humming from passenger rear, most notably at speeds above 40ish. Lately, occasionally I will hear a very soft scraping sound, almost like a rotor or stuck caliper, but everything seems fine?

No vibrations when driving, not getting less mpg, and all the wheel bearing troubleshooting hasn't turned up anything (turning and shaking the wheel while jacked up).

I have to drive home in two weeks and I just wanted to get some feedback. TIA everyone

Default jack up the rear

spin the rear wheel, my squeak turned out to be a caliper, rebuilt it and now it's good again... your sound was VERY indicative of a wheel bearing however.. either that or crappy tires...

you're welcome to try my 19s for a weekend if you want.

Default I did all that with the wheel like you said to before, but

none of it played out like a busted wheel bearing was supposed to, so that's why I'm posting here again :\

I've noticed weird creaking when I jacked up and let down, so maybe a busted strut or CV boot?

Default "play" would indicate a late stage of wheel bearing failure

my money is on the humming being a tire, or wheel bearing starting to go. does it change in pitch or go away if you steer to one direction or the other (i.e. loading up different sides of the car)?

Default yeah that's what's throwing me off, the wheel is solid and doesn't budge at all...

my tires look and feel fine, but I guess I won't really know. I'll see if I can find someone here to switch with me for a quick drive.

and no the sound doesn't change from steering, it simply gets louder as the speed increases. Thanks for your response

Default hard to tell just from looking at a tire. either way, if there's no noticeable play, you're good

to drive on it. I have driven cars with wheel bearing hum so loud the radio couldn't cover it up. Just take it easy.

Default Re: thanks for the feedback!

Just curious, was it the wheel bearing or tires? I recently purchased a 2001 TT FWD Roadster and noticed a loud rumbling in the passenger rear when I was driving the car home on the expressway. The noise is far more noticeable with the top up, when the top is down the additional wind noise muffles it somewhat.

Default haha nice job finding this thread...

it ended up being the tires! I had the bearings all ordered and ready for as soon as I came home from school, but my tires were also shot, so I got those changed out (Goodyear F1 A/S) before anything, and then the noise went away. I had forgotten how the car actually sounded haha.

It was surprising that they sounded so similar; my mechanic even drove the car and thought it was the bearings. So now I have two bearings that I'll probably switch out when I do brakes or something.
