Sounds normal to me. Car is cold and needs to be warmed up. Is this your first car?

Does it idle at that speed or just jump to 1700 when you crank it?

Does it do this every time? Mine does it occasionally, think it's normal and would stall otherwise.

Normal, though mine comes down almost immediately from that initial surge. Seems to be a common comment from owners, along with a slightly uneven idle for the first minute maybe, when the car is cold.

Default :-) . I know that it is not your first car, but car is cold give it time to come down. Also

do not touch the gas at all. Let the rpms come down when the car is ready to take off.

mine idles around 1300-1500 for like 20 seconds or so then goes back to 800... think it's normal.
