Why does the "Service" indicator come on? Is it based on miles alone? Or does it detect...

that my oil needs to be changed (or anything else for that matter). I think I've only gone like 4000 miles since my last oil change, but it has been several months. If it was reset correctly, wouldn't it only come on every 10,000 miles?

Default It's kinda based on both the mileage, and the way the car is driven...

ie. My car was serviced back in April, but the service details on the clock look like it should be coming on shortly as I only drive 2.5 miles to adn from work each day. If I was to do alot more long distance driving to get the engine "properly" warmed-up, I wouldn't see the Service coming so quick.

I think there is a way though where you can have it reset so that it only comes on every 12 months.

Maybe somebody else can answer that one ?

Default I can reset it, so no problem there. Is there a way to find out why it came on?

Is it my oil? It is coolant? Is it something else entirely? I hardly drive it so I'm not worried about it - plus I'm changing the oil this weekend anyway. I just don't want to reset it, thinking it was for my oil, then have it come back for something else that I don't know about. Know what I mean?

Default Yeah, I know what you're saying - it basically is just a computer display which

makes the calculations by how the car's driven, and on average how many miles (and probably more calculations than I can think off)you're doing.

Personally if you're gonna change the oil anyway, I'd reset it afterwards for piece of mind.

If it was the coolant, there's another symbol for that which will appear, so don't go worrying about that.

Default It's based on mileage. The counter should get reset when the dealer services the car

It will come on at whatever interval the dealer sets it for. AFAIK, there are no sensors in the car to detect wear.

Default There are 2 settings that you can have it on - 1 for an annual service, and the other for

calculating how it's being driven.

If you've got it on the 2nd setting (which mine is) give it a test when it tells you that you have say 200 miles left. I promise you, you'll do alot less than 200 miles before it chucks up the Service indicator.

Default heh, perhaps that is why mine always wants service? ;)

Any idea on how to switch between the two settings using vag-com?

Default In other words,,,>

It's random if you get out of sequence (miles)!

Just reset and do your normal service intervals
