so you were right - it was the thermostat and the water pump and they are replacing the timing belt! £325

Good deal! That is a really low price for a timing belt water pump tensioner replacement. I would check and make sure they’re changing the tensioner also. This is a good time to replace the serpentine belt too since you have to remove and replace it anyway.
FYI, The fans were not running because the radiator was not hot. Hot coolant was not circulating therefore the fan thermostat switch was not being actuated. Another diagnosis clue I should have mentioned.

It's only a few things

If its your thermostat your bottom coolant hose will not get hot while your top coolant hose does, if that's it, pull your thermostat, drop it into boiling water and see if it compresses. If it does, then your thermostat is fine.

Which means the next thing:

Open your coolant ball, pull your return hose, hold over the coolant ball opening and see if you have strong flow. Which means you have good circulation of coolant which means that your water pump is working well.

If you have slow or dribbling flow, congratulations, you have just become another victim of Audi's infamous plastic waterpump impeller and it needs to be replaced.

Hi it was both of those things! The thermostat and the water pump- they changed the timing belt for good measure which was all cracked. So now Finn gets crossed all good for another 60,000 miles! Thanks guys x

Haha, thank you. Can't take credit for it. A Youtuber named Thomas EXOVCDS, a canadian audi and VW mechanic explained this to me when I was diagnosing my failing water pump.
