Default winter tires

In the TT brochure, Audi has a footnote stating that all weather tires should be used in areas of the country that can expect excessive ice & snow. Are they inferring that the standard tires or those that come with the performance package are not adequate for use in snow?

Absolutely. The standard tires are high performance class and cannot be used in the winter in areas where you would ever experience, snow, sleet, freezing rain, etc. You will need to get a set of all season, preferably M+S rated tires, or, if you deal with LOTS of snow, snow tires, for the winter months.

Jim

I would think that they are being a bit conservative about the winter tires. I would definitely recommend them though if you expect anything major in the way of accumulation. Here in CT we only had two snow storms last year (the biggest of which dropped two inches), so I might not spring for the winter tires.
Actually if it did snow, the biggest threat is the other idiots. Almost five times in those two storms I was almost rear ended by idiots (I point in particular to SUV drivers) who think that 4 wheel drive makes you invincible and almost lost it anyway...
