Default Woah woah woah... Hydraulic bearing?

Hi guys.

So I've had a string of bad luck recently
(see cross post). Anyways... can someone explain our clutches to me? Clutch to the floor, had it towed in to the dealer. Was thinking it was some slave/master cylinder deal... maybe a cable snapped. Learned that its a hydraulic clutch, no cables and the mechanic said "it's different than other audis". My clutch is a stage 3 replaced about 1.5 years ago. So what is a "hydraulic bearing" and why would it require that everything be replaced at a cost of $3200?

https://forums.audiworld.com/midatlantic/msgs/270569.phtml</a

Default It's not different than other Audis. Get a new dealer, or mechanic. He wants to replace the flywheel

thats' what dealers do. You prolly don't need a flywheel.
Clutch kit, OEM is $300.

Get a different estimate.

Default Thanks Jeff. Do these symptoms point to any specific problems:

Clutch for the past month has been sticking halfway down, but would go away if i pulled it up with my foot. Happened first thing only in the morning about twice a week and wouldn't return. I attributed it to the cold weather... which is my mistake. This morning it went to the floor and didn't come back.

I do not beat on the clutch. I rarely drive the car since traffic is always heavy.

Thanks again
Chad

Default Well Jeff it IS sort of different----->

225s have the slave cyl inside the bell housing. It is a part of the throwout. some Audis have the slave external to the bellhousing. 9 hours labor to drop the trans and change it out on the 225. Might as well do the pressure plate and clutch disc while you are there. $ 300-$400 parts. The flywheel is optional, but while you are spending $1000+ you can spend another $400 and everything is new. That is what I did.
$3000 IS way too much. My dealer quoted $2000 approx and I bought the parts and took it to my indy and spent less than $1500. total including the flywheel.

And--- I know you know all this, but sounds like "The Chad" may not and I thought I would add my 2 bits.

Default Thanks... that's what I was looking for.

I didn't understand why the trans would have to be dropped to fix the issue, but now I see. I do understand that it is a good time to replace everything, but at $3200 i knew it was a bit steep. Stepping through my options now.

Thanks again

Default Yup...classic symptoms.....>

If it wasn't replaced when you put that clutch in, the tech should have his Nuts cut off..

Default Well, if his clutch is only a year & a half old, doesn't it seem overkill to do it all?

I would think the clutch has another 3 years on it at least. (My OEM has 120,000 miles & 7 years on it after all -- & I'm not gentle.)
