just some stuff i found...but i really don't have a clue
17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer. is probably the next code that would be thrown...
some stuff i found:
The first thing you need to do is check for fault codes in 17-Instruments (which also contains the immobilizer).
Yea, get your immobilizer code (from 17), then call your local VW/Audi Service Shop. and ask them to look up the code for you. Then go to Adaption (I believe its 2 (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong)) and type in that code they gave you. You then have to select how many channels (keys) you have. Then turn the key off, and switch it back on, wait 20 seconds, and make sure the immobilizer light goes off. Turn key off, and move to your next key.Check 01 engine, 17 cluster and 46 (or 35). They should all have a similar fault as in "control unit disabled (in ECM), "...key" in cluster (17) and I forget the fault in the central locking or convenience module. Anyway, could be a faulty "reader" in the ign, switch or one of your keys has a weak signature.
hope that helps but i coudln't find anything else..

Today we had the same problem. Everything works but the engine does not start. Code 17978 etc. The problem solved!! The tip was: Take of both cables of the batery, put them against each other (NO BATERY CONNECTED) for 30 sec.Problem solved!!
