Default Adjusting auto headlight on sensitivity

When in Auto mode, my headlights do not come on as soon as I would like. The instruments are too dark to read for quite a while before the lights come on. Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity through a setting in the computer(s)? If not, where are the light sensors located, so that I can put a neutral density filter over them. I tried putting light filters in front of the rear view mirror and on top of the middle front of the horizontal portion of the dash board, but that did not work.
