excessive oil consumption
Audi tt mk 2 auto 2007 registration
I have 47k on the clock and the oil consumption is poor (just above the official Audi test level). An independent specialist wants to move to a quality 10w/40 oil as opposed to the 5w/30 it currently runs on.
Anybody out there got views on the likelihood of the new type of oil being succesful ?
I am inclined to give it a go as the mechanic I spoke to sounded like an NASA scientist !

You may want to try replacement of your PCV and breather tube. A failed PCV/breather tube can cause excessive oil use. When they fail, It causes pressurized air from the turbo to enter the crankcase and can force oil out the valve cover or oil cap, and will cause oil to be pushed into the intake side of turbo, filling the intercooler and causing that oil to be pulled into the intake manifold and burned.
Had excessive oil use on mine. Replaced the PCV and breather and consumption stopped.
This is the kit I got.

Here is audi's TB on it

Many thanks...I should have mentioned earlier that the PCV has been checked and it is not at fault.I have just read a comprehensive report in Atlantic Motocar Centre which basically indicates that changing the oil won't resolve the problem in the long term. I guess I'll have to get an official Audi Consumption test and see if they will offer any goodwill.Apparently it's now well documented that the oil problem does harm the engine ;it causes scoring and grooves to be worn into the cylinder bores.
