Default MAF problem with 2010 Mk11 2.0 TDI

Hi, I am a new member and I have encountered a problem with my 2010 TT 2.0 TDI maf system. It first began with the check engine light on instrument panel.
Connected a scanner and it came up with the P0101 fault code telling me a MAF sensor fault or DPF fault as per the Audi manual. Did all the road tests as per manual and light remained on.
Took it to mechanic and he did a 'burn out ' of the exhaust system and the fault light disappeared. the mechanic said the problem will probably come back as the MAF sensor was also suspect.
Sure enough the light reappeared about 40k down the road. The cruise control was usually very accurate until the light came on and the speed was up and down 95-105 but not 100 kmh. I read somewhere that the MAF could do this.
Also the exhaust gases from the pipe are very sickly smelling.
I have sinced watched a few U tube vids about the MAF and after a few checks I found that the hotwire within the MAF is open circuit.
Has anyone else had this problem as the car has only done 91K?
regards.
