If you would be so kind, What is the purpose of the red pull ring along the right side of the battery compartment?

Great find! That is the manual/emergency override for if the fuel cap gets stuck locked. The cap locks with the doors, if you didn't know already, so if the actuator were to fail, that allows you to still open it.

Default Manual fuel filler door release...

Thanks for solving the mystery. Interesting to note that the figure 186 that you referenced and the figure 186 in my 2016 Owner's Manual are not the same. The manuals must be different...or perhaps Audi is just messin' with me.
