Default Secure ECU?

A friend of mine and myself both have 2017 TT Roadsters. He brought his into an APR dealer in Florida and I took my wife's to an APR dealer in NJ. For both cars the box codes weren't available yet so we had to have the ECUs read and the data sent to APR. I have to take mine back to the installer this week to have the TCU read and submitted, as I want to do both the ECU and TCU.

My friend just let me know that when he talked to the APR rep this past week he was told that they still hadn't been able to crack his ECU and this could very likely be the beginning of the "secure ECU." I haven't heard anything about mine yet.

Has anyone else heard this?

One of the reasons I went with the TTS was to avoid the craving to tune or "chip."

I got my A5 tuned and although it worked very well performance wise when it came time to get an annual state inspection the ECU would no longer interface with the [antiquated] state equipment. I did, eventually, get my tune money back tho'.

Perhaps case in point for manufacturers to avoid situations like this in the first place by securing the ECU?

My Audi dealer told me they won't accept any chipped Audi for trade in.

My A5 tune was actually dealership sanctioned/performed (ECU sent to STaSIS; before they ultimately went under). But I can understand that posture these ECU-intensive vehicle days.

The Simos ECU has always been "secure", it uses RSA encryption. I believe that's why most of these tuners charge so much. Google Audi or VW RSA encryption and you can read quite a bit about it.
