I think the TT RS's increasing performance is actually one of the reasons they are doing this. They do not want to split the market for the R8, and the TT is already climbing closer to the R8's numbers every year while remaining significantly cheaper. I imagine the last thing Audi wants is a small, mid-engine sports car for 75k that people view as Audi's "real" sports car.

I suspect you are right. However, better to cannibalize yourself than be cannibalized by others. If the 4-door direction is what they choose, I would certainly look elsewhere for my next car.
