Default Engine runs sluggish first time start in morning

Hello: I have a 2017 TT Coupe. Recently have noticed during cold mornings that it takes a while for the engine to sound normal. Sound is a bit more mechanical and if you drive the car it is extremely sluggish with little pick up. It gets better when it warms up. Not sure if this is an engine issue or just plain winter weather blues. Want to add that I used to have a 2013 TT and never had the problem with it.

I know my car starts a little noisier when its particularly colder out, the cars rpm is slightly higher and has a tinny rattle noise for about 20-30 seconds, I also read somewhere that the car limits the rpms and power output until its up to operating tempature, I tried to find the thread but was unsuccessful.

Yep, combination of ECU self-protection and also possibly winter fuel formulation in many locales.

On a cold start, mine has about a second of "dry runnning" sound (kind of like old hydraullic power steering at turn limit), due to no oil in/on the engine parts which is totally normal, just more than any other engine I've had. Then it has an RPM dependent ticking which is likely the direct injection (the O2 sensor can't give useful reading until it's hot, so the ECU is "guessing" how much fuel to add, and then adding some rich just to keep the engine safe [and maybe even doing dual pulse]). The idle stays high for 30-60 seconds (maybe 1200), then goes to maybe 1000 for another couple minutes, then it'll start to go down to 750 like normal with brake on at a stop, coinciding with the ticking stopping. These all represent how difficult direct injection is in general, idling with DI is even more tricky, much less with limited sensor information. All normal things! On a cold start the oil is like jello (relatively speaking), and there's twice the friction everywhere. I feel the exact same when I get out of bed in the morning! haha
