Default Winter Tire Question

Hi,

I recently picked up a CPO TTS with 20 in rims. Great Pirelli rubber but hard as a rock in the winter. Question to those of you who have winter tires. Do you have them on a 2nd set of rims and if so, do you go a bit smaller diameter? Or do you just swap rubber on the same rims?

18” dedicated winter rims & tires swapped seasonally.

I put winter tires on my old '11 TTS 19" Rims. Much better ride. A set of 18" would probably be better.

so, I live in southern NJ where it snows maybe 3x per winter. I certainly don't need something capable of running the Iditarod.. why don't I pick up a cheap set of Pep Boys Alloy rims and put winter rubber on for 12 weeks?

Factory 19's put away for winter, 18" Audi replica wheels one Xice3 are on for winter. Notably softer ride when it's 0 degrees compared to the summer rubber at 40 degrees. Goes nearly anywhere substantial ground clearance is not required.

Less expensive rims are a viable option given typical Winter sand/salt/pothole abuse.

The reason they're now called Winter tires (vs. snow tires) is to accentuate that it's as/more important to have a compound that remains flexible in the cold as it is to have snow-aggressive tread. The latest Nokian A/S tires might be a good candidate for your consideration as they're rated very close to "snow" tires in many applications.

I got a second set of wheels, 19" from Hartmann, for the winter. There are more choices for winter/all season tires in 19" and they are cheaper. My 20" wheels are summer tires only.

I always order winter specific wheels but we also have 5 months of winter up here so its completely worth it. I went with 19x9ET38 OZracing Rally wheels in white.

Thanks everyone for the advise. I went with a set of aftermarket 18 inch rims and all season rubber from Tirerack. Figure I'll keep them on for a few months, then in April, swap the 20s back on for the summer.
