Default 00493 - ESP-Sensor Unit (G419) 004 - No Signal/Communication

Hi, I am searching with not much luck on anything related to fixing this fault code. MIL is lit, I have been tackling a few faults and would greatly appreciate any input. I started with this fault code along with 01435-Brake Pressure Sensor. I replaced the ABS Control Module (not the pump) and the brake light switch under the dash, then ran diagnostic. Seems the brake pressure sensor fault is gone but the ESP remains. The ABS control module is the module reporting the fault for ESP but I am not sure if ESP is part of the ABS control module or some other sensor that the ABS module is reading from. If the ESP sensor is it's own sensor, does anyone know the part number or the physical location of such. The car functions normal from what I can tell except I have no functionality of the ESP button located on the dash (which I have never actually used anyhow). I cannot truly turn off the ESP when I push that button from what I can tell . Vehicle is a 2005 Audi A6 Quattro, 3.2 l engine.

It would be helpful to post the full details and description of all the current faults. However the esp sensor can either be located on the aluminium abs block, screwed in on the side, or on the brake booster vacuum line that runs from the brake booster to rain tray grommet.

Thanks. Seems I was able to identify this ESP sensor as a YAW sensor under the arm rest, at least from what I can tell however I pulled it and replaced it with no change. I put a meter on the wires at the connection and registered 12v so I assume the wiring is fine. Still for the life of me cannot figure out how to get this cleared. Specific VAG Reading is below:

Sorry I was still referring to the brake pressure sensor. The sensor you mentioned even though you have voltage may still be defective. If the new abs module was the correct part number and the new coding is correct, it could possibly be the sensor. Also wouldn’t hurt to double check all the fuses in all the fuse boxes. Give this a look aswell.

Thanks, I did run over each and every fuse with a multimeter to be sure as well. All checked out. I have now replaced the ABS module with a used but according to seller, working module from an 08 A6 and also the YAW Duo, with what the seller said was a working sensor. One thing I am not certain about is the ABS module coding. It seems I have no way to modify the code manually to make sure it is the right code for my vehicle. Everything I read says how to program a Bosh module but nothing about an Audi module nor will it let me modify the code that shows up in VAG. I do wonder if I am doing something wrong with that aspect. Could the module simply be configured for something else, like non quattro when mine is quattro or who knows what else? The MIL is immediate too. I clear the code and as soon as the key turns, the error generates again without even moving. No actual negative impact from the sensors from what I can tell, it drives fine, all brakes work fine, handles fine. The ESP button on the dash however is not functioning. It does nothing when I push it. Typically that button is supposed to allow you to turn off traction control from what I read. I wouldn't know since I have never pushed it nor do I know what it feels like if it didn't have traction control.

If you have a picture saved on your phone or anything from when you originally scanned the car showing what coding it had and compare it to the new coding it has now, if it’s changed you might be able to see. But before going in more circles I would start with coding the module and or double checking if it’s right, and then from there you have to perform basic settings on all components in a specific order. Most likely you will need to enter a security access code first before being able to code. I can’t say what window pops up for you when you click security access in abs. But if anything which I have done before you can contact Ross tech directly and someone Very knowledgeable will tell you how to go about recoding and doing the basic settings when there is no provided pop up windows to enter passwords and correct coding.

So I have logs of before and after:

Here is the ABS prior to ever touching it:

Address 03: ABS Brakes Labels: 4F0-910-517.lbl
Part No SW: 4F0 910 517 L HW: 4F0 614 517 L
Component: ESP 8.0 quattro H03 0090
Revision: 00000000 Serial number: 00000000000000
Coding: 0020895
Shop #: WSC 05146 444 59366
VCID: 2D5177C1B43BAC56E5-8078

Here is the ABS after swapping it:

Address 03: ABS Brakes Labels: 4F0-910-517.clb
Part No SW: 4F0 910 517 AD HW: 4F0 614 517 AA
Component: ESP8 quattro H01 0070
Revision: 00000000 Serial number: 00000000000000
Coding: 0020895
Shop #: WSC 02325 785 00200
VCID: 66C3C8ED514D5F7F0B-8032

The coding 020895 is consistent on both and not changeable. It does not give me an option to enter security like some of the other modules do. It did allow basic settings which only consisted of steering angle and that checked out ok.

Oddly enough, I just noticed the brake pump itself has ESP stamped in the metal housing which is attached to the module. I wonder why the pump is stamped ESP. Could it be the part of the unit that is having the issue?

It depends if the part number superceeds and the new one works with your car. Other things are different, basically all the other things, I couldn’t tell you for sure if it’s ok or a problem. Now that you say you have a new used g419 installed. I’d try swapping back your old abs module. Just the black electrical section if that’s what you changed before. And check out basic settings again. And or adaptation. Or you can call the dealership and provide your vin and the part number of the new used module you put in and they should be able to tell you if it’ll work in your car.

Wow, so I just heard back from Ross Tech and I did not catch this. The module I pulled off is 4F0 910 517 L, the one I bought is 4F0 910 517 AD. The L and the AD mean something and they say is the issue. That the replacement part # must be identical to the original. I had not caught the letters on the end as being different. Anyhow, just ordered an L version now and will see if that restores to normal. Pretty certain the ESP sensor has no real issue here since it has voltage to it but who knows. Will probably be able to swap it out Saturday to find out.
