VAG-COM wont recognize interface

VAG-COM wont recognize interface
Recently, I've tried connecting my computer to the car via my cable and the latest VAG software (this is a 2003 A4 3.0). for some reason, though the software says "port status: ok" it also says "interface: not found!" and i can't connect to the car. i know the com port on the computer is correct, as i use it succesfully with other things. this setup has worked in the past, but no longer works for some reason. my guess is it must be a faulty interface (i got it from a company other than ross-tech, whose name i can't remember). any ideas? thanks

The correct version for interfaces like that is 311.2.

Did you read the release notes on 504.1?! You didn't.
Release 504 MUST be used with a HEX or KEY Series "high-tech" Interface.
It does NOT work with any third-party interfaces or some of our older "low-tech" interfaces.
