Car was ordered in October and is expected sometime after March 25.

Perhaps it is not worded correctly. The transaction is between the dealer and the buyer. I am asking for my deposit back. Apparently some believe you can order a car and simply ask for the deposit back when one no longer wants it.
It is not that easy. The dealer is under no obligation to return a deposit. I am in Massachusetts, perhaps the laws are different in other states.

From the Massachusetts Consumer Coalition's Guide page 30 regarding dealer sales contracts.
You should be aware that the dealer may not be required
to return your deposit if you decide to cancel the deal and if:
_ You and the dealer have signed the contract and;
_ The contract has a special section on the front
page, clearly blocked-off, that states the
circumstances under which your deposit will be
kept and;
_ The specific dollar amount is filled in and;
_ You initial that clause, separately from your
signature at the bottom of the contract.
