3=6 missing engine. Solutions?

I have an opportunity to buy a very intact, virtually rust free 1958 DKW 3=6 coupe. However, it's entire engine is missing. Is this surmountable?
Here in the U.S., getting a complete engine seems like a tall order. The similarity of both the engine and the layout is stikingly similar to the Saab 96, down to the shift linkage, rear facing fan, shape of engine, and distirbutor location. Might it be more practical to transplant the Saab drivetrain? What about a V4? Any comments or leads are most appreciated.

Dear David i can see your dificulty cause i rebuilded a same car 3 years ago and also the engine was destroyed.Fortunatelly i managed to find parts to built a new one.The best solution for you is to fit a Wartburg engine because it matches perfectly underhood even with DKW's gear box.Also check this site http://www.dkwhesse.de/
Let me know if you need more help.Matthews.

Thanks, Matthews. I think I have decided not to make the leap into this car as it has no title and in CA you can't get a title until it's running. This means you have to expend funds to get it going, not knowing if a title can be secured. I'd like to find a runner in the Pacific northwest.
