DKW camper

On a recent road trip, I caught a glimpse of a '50's DKW with a camper body in a back yard in Ehrenberg, AZ. Was this something available from the factory or dealers, or was it more likely a homemade creation?

"The body was made of wood construction using 2 X 4's. The roof was fiberglass and the siding was Masonite with seams covered by aluminum strips. Featured a small sink and ice box. The rear dinette sat 4 people, made into a bed and above was a dual hammock affair. A settee was opposite the kitchenette. Windows were screened and cranked open. Enrty was through the curb side cab door. Cruising speed was 45 MPH with 50 MPH possible going downhill."
IIRC there was one in nearby Joshua Tree, CA, that the owner kept his firewood dry in.

That sure looks like what I saw. What a great vehicle it would be to restore - to take to car and RV shows on a trailer - NOT to travel in on today's Interstates.
Road&Track magazine did a road test on their DKW van in '56. It outperformed the VW bus, but nowadays probably a Wal-Mart electric shopping cart would be nearly as fast.
