for an 05 A6. Currently running OEM Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 XL. 45,000 uneventful miles, now time to replace. Other A/S tires to consider? I'm in DC so not too much snow but we do get some ice. TIA.

i am thinking about the updated Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus for my next tire.
It is more summer performance oriented that what you have now. Less winter/ice traction than the MxM4 has. If you want to go a tad less $$, the Goodyear F1 A/S is getting great reviews also.

Does it really have to be XL-load-rated? TR allows non-XL for this car too, AFAIK.
BTW, I recently put on Bridgestone RE960 on mine. Pretty good grip/handling for an all-season tire. I have yet to try them in light snow though.
