To align, or not to align?

To align, or not to align?
Was shopping for tires yesterday and the salesman says that I should really get a 4-wheel alignment done if replacing all four tires. Is this true? And if so, I've heard that it is best to take it to the Audi dealer. I don't tend to trust the guys selling me the service, so please give input.

Have one scalloped on the rear passenger, but the dealer...
told me it was on the front passenger when it came in, and they replaced the fronts with new ones, and those are wearing just fine. I believe the tie-rod was replaced and that the scalloped tire was a result of the tie-rod but I'm not 100% positive, but he did say that the tire was on the front drivers side when it came into the dealer.
