any NorCal'ers with experience running SP5000 during winter for Tahoe trips?
would like to hear some firsthand feedback regarding dry/wet/snow performance for our typical winter conditions. tire size info might be of help too. i was thinking of running stock 205/55/16's. thanks!

Worked well enough in the snow/ice at Mammoth...
Not nearly as good as dedicated snows, but never scared me either. I was always able to stop and turn as long as I took it easy.

They work fine for me...
I did a lot of head-scratching as well in this situation last year, and decided to go with all-season SP5000s on my stock sports wheels.
They handle decently on dry roads, but stop and turn just fine in the snow. Wet performance is ok too, but nothing compared to my summer tires (225/45-17 S-02PPs) which handle in rain better than the SP5000s in dry.
But no way would I ever take the S-02s in the snow. Even if the main highways are clear, the side roads leading to the ski resorts and in the parking lots can have a foot or more of snow, so you need to have decent tires.
All-seasons will last longer than snow-only tires, especially on those 6+ hour drives up to Tahoe...
It's also great fun to find a remote and deserted section of a snow-covered parking lot, and practice tromping on the gas and spinning all 4 wheels, and hitting the brakes and feeling the ABS kick in. After a while, you learn how to get the Quattro in a nice controlled 4-wheel drift, and then hit the gas and power right out of it... Lots of fun until the parking attendants start yelling at you...

"PaJohn" had Yoko AVSdB tires, and he said they were terrible in snow.
