I need some help with tire selection. I want to have a dedicated set of track tires.
I have 2 sets of wheels for my 4.2
A) 17" x 8" (audi sport)
B) 18" x 9" (oettinger RZ)
I have a couple of questions.
#1) Assuming the same tire, which set of rims will give the best track performance? My guess is the wider because I can run a wider tire and increase contact patch.
#2) Unfortunately I have to drive to the track 100-200 miles and nowhere to carry 4 track tires.,sometimes in the rain. With this in mind what tires would you recomend. I'm looking at So3,pilots, sp9000 and any others.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, especially from track addicts.:-)

use the 17x8 and put Yokohama AO32R on them.
The AO32R "Advan" is a competition tire that has a very pronounced tread pattern that works well in wet conditions, and is DOT approved for street use.
The treadwear rating is 60, compared to 220 or higher for the tires you listed, but those tires you listed are not very suitable for the track. I have run Michelin Pilot Sports at the track and I was sliding all over the place.
Other good choices include the Toyo Proxes T1-S or the Yokohama AVS Sport. Both work well as a dedicated track tire, and have a higher treadwear rating that the AO32R.
Hope that helps.
