i'm moving to boston next month from nor cal and i need suggestions on what kind of tires do i need to run during the winter. and can i run 235/45/17 as a all weather tire or a snow tire.

my only experiance on snow is been on a few trips to tahoe and i was running my stock all season 15" with no problem. but i don't know if i will need something better for the winter season. any suggestions?

I'd probably get 15" winter tires - and 17" rims for the summer

I'll be placing winter tires on my A4 and will have 4 Eagle LS 205/60/15 tires available for a very good price. They are the OEM tires for my stock suspension A4 and have only 2400 miles on them. Might be good as snow tires for someone who doesn't live in a really snowy area. I'll let them go for $125 plus shipping. Let me know. If no one takes this offer the tire store will dispose of them and that seems to be a waste.

and never had a problem with only front wheel drive so AWD should be a bonus. I'm going to give it a try with Dunlop SP5000s which seem to be the HP All Season tire of choice on this forum. When you get up here and we have our first snow storm, find yourself an empty parking lot and go out there and get the feel of starting, stopping sliding etc. I do it every winter and it brings back your winter driving skills.

If you want to run high performance tires, then get a second set of wheels for winter tire use. If you want one set of tires period, then look to all season tires.

We dont often get deep snow around Boston and the plows are pretty good about getting out to clear things up so the main advantage to dedicated winter tires over all season will be more security for those times when you need to go and the plows cant keep up and for trips to the mountains - we dont get anything like what you see may going over the passes from Sacremanto to Tahoe, but it can get ugly once in a while.

I like the performance of tires like the Michelin Pilot Sport and the simply suck in the cold and snow so I put on a set of winter wheel/tires around Thanksgiving. They are Blizzak WS22.

Also, go with narrower tires if you do winter tires or all season. I run 225 in the summer and 205 in winter.
