Default Need advice on downsizing A7 wheels for the winter

Ive just moved with my 2014 A7 (LOVE IT!) to Colorado and need some advice for winter feet! I've driven the 20" low profile tires in the snow before, and want something that can handle the snow without building up a freaking glacier in my wheel wells. Tire rack says to move down to 17" wheels with blizzak or Michellin Xi3. But I can't get a confident view as to the wisdom of downsizing to 17 or 18 inch wheels. Is it ok? I just want the safest configure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

We have had the opportunity to measure the car, and can guarantee any of the wheels you would see listed for the vehicle (regardless of diameter) to be a safe fit. Downsizing the wheel lets us use a taller profile tire for better pothole protection, and in some cases we can use a narrower tire for better traction;
