New or Used Tires?
So I have a 2005 B6 A4 with 55,000 miles on it and my original tires, Michelin Pilot MXM4, only have 3/32" tread left. I plan on selling my car in the next year and drive 14,000 miles a year with the majority on the highway. If it matters, I live in Boston. I will probably just buy OEM tires since I plan on selling the car, but I am a little reluctant to shell out $800+ for a set of 4 new tires knowing I will sell the car in a year or less. What do you guys think-new or old?
Thanks. |
new, but not necessarily that expensive
Assuming you have the stock size of 215/55/16, you can get a set of ContiExtremeContacts or Bridgestone 009 for about $360 plus shipping and mounting.
When you sell it next year, your car will be worth a little more because it'll still have good tires at that point. Plus, you'll get to drive on brand new tires (full tread depth = better wet and snow traction) for the remainder of the ownership. When you buy used tires, their best years and miles of performance are already behind you. |
Sorry, they are stock but 235/45/17 on my Quattro. Thanks for the advice, I'm completely clueless.

Depends on what you find, but if you're not specifically knowledgeable abotu tires
..i'd call tire rack and get advice on cheap, acceptable tires, and have them locally installed.
Khumo and Sumitomo make good, cheap tires generally. Grant |
Cool, I'll do some research into cheaper tires on my own too.

Still, you can do a lot better than $800+ :)
