RE960 vs. Proxes 4 vs. ContiExtreme Contact
Hi
I'm considering a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position for a 2006 A3 2.0 (not quattro). I'm in Connecticut, so lots of rain driving, and occasional (as of recent years) snow.
Other all-season alternatives (for ~$160 less for a set of 4 OTD) are:
Toyo proxes 4
Continental ContiExtreme Contact
Are the bridgestones worth the extra money? Are these good choices? Any advice would be appreciated.
thanks,

IMO, the Contis would be the best in snow, so if you're not planning on having dedicated winter...
tires, then I would probably go with those.
Any of the above 3 tires will get you through the summer. It's the white stuff that's problematic.

Well stated.
I don't know about the Toyo, but as ex-QPete posted the Extreme Contact should be noticably better in snow, while the RE960A/S will have an advantage in dry handling and steering response.<ul><li><a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR8&url=/tires/index.jsp">Tires</a></li></ul>

Re: Well stated.
Thanks for the advice. On the tirerack site, the RE960 has slightly better snow reviews. See
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/CompareTires.jsp?sortValue=1&resultsNumberSele cted=Y&displayResults=10&compare=true& compareList=1%2C2&RunFlat=All&goWhere=%252 Ftires%252FCompare1.jsp&width=225%2F&ratio =45&diameter=17&performance=UHPAS&star tIndex=0
This may be a statistical artifact due to the relatively few people that reviewed the RE960 in relation to the amount of people that reviewed the Contis.
Do you think this makes a difference?<ul><li><a href="http://www.tirerack.com/a.jsp?a=AR4&url=%2Ftires%2FCompareTires.jsp%3Fsort Value%3D1%26amp%3BresultsNumberSelected%3DY%26amp% 3BdisplayResults%3D10%26amp%3Bcompare%3Dtrue%26amp %3BcompareList%3D1%252C2%26amp%3BRunFlat%3DAll%26a mp%3BgoWh

Looking at same choices here...but TR salesman on phone downplayed Contis.
He said that they were an 'inferior product' compared to the RE960s or Yokohama Advan S4s. I'd already told him that I don't need maximum summer performance. So in what way--noticeable to me-- would they be 'inferior?'
Via the TR reviews and surveys, and comments here, the Contis look like a solid choice and a good value. I was really surprised to hear a TR guy badmouth them...especially as they're such a big seller.
I may order them anyway!

TR is great until you get on the phone with them, some of their reps are full of BS IMHO...
What's funny is when I called about the ContiExtreme Contacts, the rep was raving about them to me like they were the next best thing since sliced bread and now I hear someone downplayed them to you.
I own the tires and tey are a solid tire, I have only had a chance to try them in the wet and dry but I have no doubts they will perform well in light snow
