Recommended Torque for Wheel Bolts
What is the recommended Torque in pounds and if you like newtons for the wheel bolts?
I just got back my audi TTS which had my new set of winter wheels and tires balanced. The invoice on the service stated the wheels were put on with 125 lbs of torque. I have heard everything from as as low as 80 lbs to several hundred pounds of torque. Several hundred sounds crazy. If you get a flat, good luck. Also I would think you might be approaching the limit of the threads and endanger stripping them. |
Tourque, the spec for the Audi TTS will be 88 ft*lbs. That's not a recommendation, it's the published specification you will find in your Owner's Manual.

Thanks could you recommend a good torque wrench?

Well, do you want to go the Harbor Fright way for $10, or spend $120 at Snap On?

I'd lean for a quality tool I can depend on for emergency and seasonal changes in wheels.

I've got both the brands I mention. The Snap On is obviously a lifetime tool. However, the Pittsburgh Pro from HF tested really well against all the premium brands. I've tested mine on a cablirator and it's +/- 1 ft*lb.
The premium brands tend to be nicer, easier to read. I guess my favorite design is the click type from Snap On. I don't know if we can still buy Sears/Craftsman brand, but their stuff tends to be more mid-pack and fairly priced. To be honest, the $10 device from HF plus a 17mm socket is really all you need for use a couple times per year. |
