RS7 - steering wheel shaking - help

hi Folks - I hit my rear wheel yesterday on a curb. I was going pretty slow (20km/h). I noticed at speeds of 80km/h or Hughe my steering wheel shakes and I feel a slight vibration on my pedal. Anyone know what this could be? Bent rim, balance, alignment issue?

Yikes sorry to hear this! Base on what you said, its very likely you bent a rim. However you mentioned that you hit the rear rim so I am surprised you are getting steering wheel and pedal vibration as that signals that you may of hit your front rim on that side (left or right side). How does your rim look on the outside? Did you rash the rim? If so it will need to be spun on the hunter road force machine which can measure the radial and lateral run out of the rim to see if its bent or warped. If that is checked fine than you need to rebalance the tire as it may of been pushed out of balanced by hitting the curb. I would take both the front and rear wheel/tire off and have a specialist look closely at them when they are being spun on the machine to se for any bends. Alignment does not cause vibration. These Audis are super sensitive to tire/wheel balance as I have a 2016 A7 with 20s and had delt with slightly out of round tires that cause high freq vibration in steering wheel and pedals. Make sure the tech road force balance the wheel/tire to below 10 lbs for glass smooth ride.

Damn. I hope it’s not a bent rim. I have the 21” RS7 sports rims on with Pirelli Winter Sotto Zero 3’s. I’ve left the car at the Audi dealership. Will let them know of your suggestions. I appreciate the help.

The dealership had a look at it. They've said it's not a bent rim (phew), they are suggesting to get re-balancing ($149 CDN) done and an alignment ($259 CDN). Do you guys think alignment is necessary? Wondering if the dealership's just gouging me by overselling something that may not be necessary.

That's great no bent rims. Yes do the realignment because that wheel will likely be out of alignment slightly with hitting curb. It always happens. You don't want to ruin a good prielli tire with that wheel being out of camber or toe from curb. I always have my alignment checked routinely every year cuz of bad roads here in Michigan during winter time during the spring time when I change out from winter 19s to summer 20s.

Have them do road force balance not regular balancing. all Audi dealers have this machine and it's very good and better than regular balancing. Tell them all wheel/ tire balance below 10lbs road force or .010 run out.

Yes - I've done both the balancing and the alignment. Drives great. I'm going through the process of picking out some summer wheels. 21" Brixton VL13's or Vorsteiner VFN50
