So does the 4/32nd maximum allowable tread differential apply to front/back and side/side,
or does side/side need to be a smaller differential? This is for my 2003 RS6. I'm not really wanting to replace all 4 tires because one needs replacing due to damage, but will do so if I need to.
TIA,

there are a few choices....
...one is to get the new tire shaved a bit to match the others.
If you're not that enthralled with the tires, then you can get a new set and sell the other 3.
Remember though that the new advice (at least in any kind of wet weather) is to change tires at 4/32nds so your tires are over 50% worn.
This all depends on the type of tire - if you have all seasons (that have a longer life) then replacing one might be the way to go. On a tire with 20k mile life you might want to get new ones....
