What tires to get in the spring? Maybe Christmas gifts.

What tires to get in the spring? Maybe Christmas gifts.
Now that I've pretty much decided on what wheels to put on my 2001 A4 1.8T,Q, stock suspension, it is time to pick a tire. I'll be getting a 5 spoke wheel(Modas or MMs) in a 17" and putting on 225/45 tires. I'm not looking for the best handling tire in the world but something drastically better then the Eagle LS 205/60/15s they are replacing. Putting Blizzaks on those wheels so looking for "summer tires". I want a smooth and quiet ride, will be keeping the stock suspension and need good wet handling. What does everyone recommend? I hear good things about the Dunlop SP 5000, but Tirerack doesn't have them in my size. Do they come in a 225/45/17? Also, would the S-03 Pole Positions be more tire then I need? I could call Eddie and ask him but I thought I'd start with the AW folks. Thanks all.

IMHO, the S-03 is not more than you'd want ...
... handling is great wet and dry, but perhaps the biggest difference you'd notice is under braking -- they're fantastic.
I've gradually been getting a bit more aggressive with my braking, while trying to be smoother both on and off the brakes. [I've also been practicing trail braking ... for my next track session.]
Fine, but my company car is a Toyota Camry that I really don't drive but once every two weeks or so. Last week I came up to a stop sign on a clean dry road, at a lower speed than I would in my S8, and the next thing I know the Camry's ABS is activated.
I totally underestimated the increased stopping power of the S-03's vs tires probably similar to your Goodyear's.

S-03's on an S8

S-03s are not smooth and quiet
they are noisy and bumpy IMO...
But they handle veeery nicely.
Take a look at the tests on tire rack. You might like the Dunlop SP-9000 or Pirelli PZero Rosso.

Re: What tires to get in the spring?
As you mention, call me to discuss, but the summer tires to look at would be the S03PPs as the best-of-the best, or the Dunlop SP9000s. They trade off some of the dry handling and wet performance of the S03ss, but they do give a bit more ride (not a hige difference though).
Hope this helps, call me to discuss when you need them!
