Wheel hub assembly
I hope this isn't a silly question but is it possible/ how difficult is it to change the wheel hub to change from a 5 nut rim to, say, a center nut rim?
Would it be impossible to do because of the wheel speed sensor? |
Forgeline makes such a kit...
This kind of conversion is possible and is even an OEM option on some cars, although they tend to be very high end. For example, The Porsche GTS has a center nut/five-lug option that is identical in price. Curiously, Porsche recommends the five-lug set-up for track use and frequent wheel change situations as the center lug is much more complicated than it looks. It is secured with over 400 ft-lb of torque which will destabilize a car when it is on a jack and you try to tighten even half of the torque. The five lugs at 80 ft-lb/each can be easily removed with an impact wrench or ratchet and replaced with a hand-operated torque wrench.
That being said, Forgeline, among others offers a conversion package: Forgeline: Forgeline Center Lock Wheel and Center Lock Hub Conversion Packages I am wondering if this is primarily an aesthetic decision, or some performance consideration? Theoretically a center locking wheel might weigh slightly less, thus reducing unsprung weight, but that is not where I would start in that attempt. Happy Motoring Eric |
Thanks for the response!
Purely aesthetic though. Given what you said I don't think I would go through with it. It would make changing a tire on the side of the road impossible. |
