Default When is a good time to put winter tires on?

I understand that using winter tires on dry pavement will wear the tires quicker. With fluctuating temperatures, it's hard to tell when the temperature will stay at a temperature where winter tires should be fine. I also don't want to be stuck in a situation where I'll regret not having the winter tires on.

I just got my winter tires and put them in the garage. The tire installer said they would swap the wheels on/off the car at no charge whenever I needed to have it done.

Thanksgiving and easter, but that's in Northern NJ. Where do you live? FLA :-)

Default Columbus, OH

I'm thinking the temperature has more to do with it than a general time of the year.

Default you are right - and also if you wait till snow is forcasted - everyone will be at the tire dealers

to get new tires on - you do not want to be there for that wait.

Which is why I do my own swapping.

Default When average temps drop below 40F

You can still get caught out with this. I live near Detroit and I normally wouldn't put winter tires on until Thanksgiving, but today there was snow and ice on just about every major expressway in the area.

Default Well, yea its about temps, but they vary all over the place. That's the point, isnt it?

And in my climate - similar to yours, Thanksgiving and easter work well.

Default Thanks. I think I'll be swappping wheels this weekend.

It might not be the best time to do so, but it'll be close enough. On Thursday of next week we are driving to Dayton for a flight to Maine. While it might still be OK to drive on the summer tires, I'd rather not be stuck with them when we return and possibly have snow or ice.

Default This is the time of year when all-seasons are truly the best. Run them until 2nd snow storm's coming
