Audi A3: How to Replace Center Brake Light
The center brake light on Audi A3 is easy to replace. The instructions in this article will show you how.

The center brake light above the rear window on the Audi A3 does more than just stylize your car. It helps drivers behind you see that you are stopping more easily, since it's higher than the tail lights. The center brake light is just a long strand of LED bulbs. Unfortunately, it's not possible to replace just the bulbs, since they are a part of the brake light housing. They don't go out very often, so this is not a repair you can expect to make frequently.
Materials Needed
- Replacement center brake light
- Long needle nose pliers
Step 1 – Remove the old center brake light
Open up the hatch and peel back the trim behind the center brake light. You should see four white clips that resemble arrows. Take your needle nose pliers and push in those clips. When the clips are released, push the center brake light out and reach around as well as pull it all the way out from the car. Unplug the electrical connector and set the old center brake light aside.
Step 2 – Install new center brake light
Connect your new center brake light to the electrical connector. Then line up the clips on the back of the light with the tabs in the car. Push in the center brake light until all the clips snap into place. You may need to go around to the other side of the light and pull the clips with your needle nose pliers. Then return the back trim to its original position. Then start the car and test the new brake lights.
Pro Tip
Be careful as you push in the clips. There are springs attached to the clips that could fall out, and if one were to fall into the car, then you're probably not going to get it back.
