Audi A4 Avant, Q5 and Q7: How to Turn Off the Rear Wiper

The very common rear wiper on the wagon models is easy to turn on. So easy, in fact, you usually don't realize how you've turned it on. When that happens, the rear wiper just continues to go swish until you either figure it out or you end up here asking how to turn it off. The procedure is simple and usually deserves a palm plant to the face when figured out.

This article applies to the Audi A4 Avant, Q5, and Q7 (1994-Present).

While it isn't a technical glitch or mechanical problem, it is of major annoyance when the rear wiper gets stuck on and for all the trouble in the world, there seems to be no way to turn it off. Some may even be surprised that there is a rear wiper! Getting turned on or off is a relatively simple procedure.

Material Needed

  • No tools are needed

Normal behavior for the rear wiper, when turned on, is to swipe every four (4) seconds.

Step 1 – Turn on the wiper

In order to know how to turn off the wiper, it's good to know how the silly thing got turned on in the first place. Sitting in the driver's seat, you'll notice there is the direction indicator arm (blinker) on the left-hand side, as you'd find on any car. This is standard for most any car in existence today. What is not common is where the manufacturer may put the wiper controls. For the Audi A4 Avant, the controls are on the right-hand side of the column. Pushing the control forward there should be detected two distinct positions. The first position is for the rear wiper. Push and hold at the second position (all the way forward) to actuate the rear washer.

Step 2 – Turn off the wiper

As you can probably imagine, to turn off the wiper, pull the handle back to the position closest to the steering wheel. You shouldn't have to yank on the control too hard, as it should pop right back into resting position without too much effort.

Step 3 – Wiper action while in reverse

It should be noted, the wiper sometimes seems to have a mind of its own. There are times when the wiper will come on during normal operation. If you have the front windshield wipers on and place the vehicle in reverse, the rear wiper will come on and stay on while the vehicle remains in that state. As soon as you shift back into Drive (or forward gears), the wiper should turn off.
