Audi A4 B7/B8: How to Change Power Steering Fluid

Changing the power steering fluid on your Audi A4 will ensure your power steering pump lives a long life. Read on to learn how to do it.

This article applies to the Audi A4 B7 and A4 B8 (2005-2015).

The power steering fluid is the hydraulic fluid in your pump that gives power to the power steering. When the power steering fluid needs changing, you could start hearing noises when your turn your steering wheel, like a moaning noise of some kind. Replacing the fluid isn't a difficult process, and going to the dealership will cost you a lot more than what it should cost for such procedure. Read on to learn how to drain the old power steering fluid, and refill it with fresh, new fluid.

Audi A4 B7/B8: How to Change Power Steering Fluid

Materials Needed

  • Fluid pump
  • Funnel
  • Power steering fluid

Step 1 – Pump old fluid out

Locate the power steering reservoir in your Audi. It should be behind the driver's headlight. Open up the reservoir's cap, then use your fluid pump to suck the old fluid out of the reservoir. When it's all done, move the hose around to ensure you removed all the fluid from the bottom of the reservoir.

Step 2 – Refill with new fluid

Refill the power steering reservoir with new fluid. Use a funnel to avoid making a mess. Then start the car and let it run for a few minutes.

With the cap still off, cycle the steering wheel from lock-to-lock a few times. Suction out the fluid in the reservoir and again refill with fresh fluid. Cycle the steering again to purge any air from the system. After this is complete, recap the system.

Step 3 – Check power steering level

Use the power steering reservoir's cap to check the fluid level. If it's too low, add some fluid.
