Audi A4 B7/B8: How to Replace Heat/AC Blower Motor

A faulty blower motor can leave you freezing or sweating, quite literally. Here's how to replace the blower motor in your A4, and make your driving experience comfortable once again.

This article applies to the Audi A4 B7 and A4 B8 (2004-2015).

The heater/AC blower motor in your car does pretty much exactly what you would think it does: it forces air through your vents. The motor contains a resistor that enables it to change the speed of the fan based on what speed you set it to. If your blower motor stops working or is working intermittently, you will want to check it before you rush out to buy a new one. It's common for bad connections or debris jams to cause the motor to stop working or work intermittently, and these are easy (and free) repairs. You will want to pull it out and test it before running down to the parts store, which could save you some money in the process.

Materials Needed

  • 5.5 and 8mm sockets
  • Ratchet and extension
  • Trim removal tool (or plastic wedge)

Step 1 – Remove the glove box

Begin by prying off the passenger side dash panel cover with a trim removal tool or plastic wedge. Remove the single 8mm bolt underneath the cover. Open the glove box and remove the MMI with radio removal keys, then unplug the connector behind it. Remove the 8mm bolt behind the MMI. Remove the seven 8mm bolts located along the upper portion of the glove box and the two 8mm in the very back. Remove the two 8mm bolts from underneath the glove box and lower it. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the glove box and remove it.

Step 2 – Remove the blower motor

With the glove box removed, you will be able to see the blower motor. If you're having intermittent problems, inspect the wiring and connections to see if they are in good shape. Remove the two electrical connectors and two 5.5mm bolts from the blower motor regulator. Pull down on the blower motor tab while twisting it and it will pop out. Once out, clean out any debris inside the motor. Test it by spinning the cage, checking for wobbles and noises. A good motor will not make any noise while the cage is turning. Apply 12 volts to the motor to see if it is good or faulty (it should start running right away), or use a multimeter.

Step 3 – Install new blower motor

Set the new blower motor in place and twist to lock it in place. Before putting everything back together, test to make sure the motor is working properly. Reinstall the bolts and connectors. Reconnect the glove box connectors and reinstall the glove box bolts, MMI, and side dash panel.
