Audi A4 B7: How to Install Bi-Xenon E-Code Headlights

Want to replace your old Xenon headlight bulbs with bi-xenon ones and give your car a more modern look? This article will guide you through the process, step-by-step.

This article applies to the Audi A4 B7 (2005-2007).

Xenon headlights give you a much brighter light output than halogens, and they emit a bluish tint that is also more modern looking than the white light of halogens. It's exactly why you will find them on newer luxury cars. With regular xenon headlights, a halogen bulb is still used for the high beams, however. But now you can get bi-xenon headlights, which offer xenon lighting for both high and low beams from the same unit. They can accomplish this by featuring a shade or filter in front of the bulb during low beam operation, which moves or turns off when you switch to high beams. If you want to upgrade the intensity and looks of your high beams, keep reading and we'll walk you through the installation.

Materials Needed

  • 10mm socket and ratchet
  • Long socket extension
  • Torx bit socket set
  • Jack and jack stands

Step 1 – Remove the front bumper

While it is possible to complete the job without removing the front bumper (see this thread), it's much more difficult.

Open the hood and jack up the front. Suspend the front of the car on jack stands and remove the front wheels. Remove the 12 bolts and screws holding on the front bumper cover: three on top, four on the sides (behind the wheel well lining), two bolts in the upper section (requires an extension), and three screws on the bottom where the belly pan is connected. Remove the screws on top of the headlight housing, disconnect the bulb connector, and pull them out.

Remove the plastic panel underneath the dash to access the ECM, then remove the grey plug on the ECM by sliding the purple clip down. Route the wires for the headlights through the tack tie and place the pins into the empty slots: 21 and 22. Reinstall the grey plug and zip tie any excessive wiring. Test to make sure the new lighting is working properly, then reinstall the headlight assemblies and front bumper.
