This article applies to the Audi A4 B7 (2004-2008).

Headlight bulbs have become more and more complicated to replace as cars have gotten more and more complicated themselves. Instead of simply reaching under the hood and twisting the socket out, now we've got to remove all different kinds of components just to get to the sockets and the bulbs themselves. This adds time, which also adds labor charges if you get your bulb changed out by a dealership. But if you've got a little spare time (and some spare patience), you can save a decent amount of money by doing it yourself. Here's how to swap that burned out headlight bulb for a new one.

Materials Needed

  • Replacement bulb
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • T30 Torx screwdriver bit

Step 1 – Replacing the passenger side headlight bulb

Pop the hood. For the passenger side, locate the four Phillips screws along the front shroud and remove them. Pull the air intake box out for easy access to the bulbs. Remove the two Torx screws on top of the headlight housing with a T30 bit. Remove the remaining bolts from the back side of the headlight housing. Disconnect the bulb assembly by prying upward on it with a flat head screwdriver. Take out the headlight housing and remove the cover from the back. Pull the old bulb out and replace it with the new bulb. Replace the cover, then slide the headlight back into place and reconnect the bulb assembly. Replace the bolts and the air intake box.

Step 2 – Replacing the driver side headlight bulb

Remove the cover by lifting it straight up. Remove the two T30 bolts: one located underneath the removed cover and the other up near the radiator hose. Remove the screws from the headlight assembly (same as the passenger side) and disconnect the bulb assembly. Pull the headlight out and remove the cover, then replace the bulb. Replace the cover and slide the headlight back in, then replace the bolts and the cover.
