This article applies to the B8 Audi A4 (2008-2015).

The B8 Audi A4 is a beautifully engineered compact executive vehicle with an impressive track record for delivering high performance, top speed, guaranteed longevity and increased fuel economy. However, the manufacturer is aware of some common problems, and have made that information available to the public via recalls, technical service bulletins and general updates, all of which can be found on Audi-related sites. Here's the information you'll want to know about the B8 Audi A4, as well as the pro tips you'll want to follow to prevent these issues from affecting your car later on down the line. Let's get started with the easiest repairs first, and then finish up with the more complicated (or harder to diagnose) repairs last!

Easy Repairs

Let's get started with the repairs you'll most commonly hear associated with the B8 Audi A4:

  • An excess in oil consumption, resulting in more frequent trips to the pumps.
  • Noisy sunroof, resulting in an unpleasant buffeting noise when the sunroof is open and the vehicle is in motion.
  • A light to strong vibrational pull that can be felt within the steering wheel whenever the vehicle is driven at low speeds.

All of the above-mentioned repairs are covered under warranty, and considered "easy fixes" by most Audi dealers.

Moderate Repairs

The high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) does have a high failure rate among older model years; however, recent model years have been shown to demonstrate an overall decrease in the number of complaints received on the vehicle, with fewer and fewer owners experiencing any problems with their HPFP or requiring the need for a complete replacement, which could run approx. $1,000 in costs.

Possible Difficult Repairs

While an engine misfire can be easy to diagnose, the culprit behind what's causing the problem to occur might not be so easy to fix, particularly if the engine is experiencing a persistent number of issues (beyond bad spark plugs and wires). The Audi A4 is no different. If the engine on your Audi experiences persistent misfires, oil consumption problems, and reduced engine performance, run your trouble codes and have your vehicle serviced immediately.

Common Questions

How often should I replace my engine oil?

Replace your engine oil every 4,000 to 5,000 miles with premium-quality engine oil, not regular.

Any issues pertaining to the intake manifold gasket?

Some owners have reported experiencing issues with the intake manifold gasket. Common symptoms included leaks due to worn seals, overheating, and rough driving. Have your intake manifold inspected for damage and repair as needed.

Who pays for safety-related defects?

The manufacturer is required by law to pay the repair costs for any and all safety-related defects. Technical Service Bulletins, on the other hand, are considered recommended services, which the owner, if he or she chooses to follow, must cover.

Common Issues

Bad Water Pump

Water pump problems have been commonly reported on the this model of Audi A4. The best way to detect early signs of water pump failure is to look for early deposits of rust, corrosion and other build-up along the surfaces of the water pump, leaks from the mounting surface, and damage or wear to bearings and seals. If your engine starts to overheat, this is another sign your water pump is damaged and will need to be replaced.

Engine Oil Deposits

You might need to change your engine oil more frequently. As well, make sure you are using only premium-quality engine oil in your reservoir.

Speed Wobble

A frightening occurrence, speed wobble is a temporary loss in the control of your vehicle. It is commonly caused by hard braking. However, in the B8 Audi A4, the problem is highly common and most frequently associated with a faulty power steering hose. Symptoms include a side to side vibrational force in the steering wheel when traveling at low (steady) speeds or when traveling over pot holes.
