This article applies to the Audi A6, A3, A4 and Q5/Q7 (2004-2010).

The factory armrest latches on early Audi models have problems. They would break at the pivot points or handle because the material just wasn't strong enough to handle daily use. Audi put out a repair kit just for this problem. These repair kits include a new latch and back plate for the armrest, but they are somewhat pricey. Alternatively, if you search online, you can find just the replacement latches. The installation is very simple and doesn't require a trip to the dealership. So save yourself some money and replace it yourself.

Audi: How to Replace Center Console Plastic Latch

Materials Needed

  • Replacement latch or armrest repair kit
  • Plastic trim tool or flat head screwdriver

Step 1 – Remove broken latch

Open up the armrest lid. In order to replace the broken latch, you'll first need to remove the back plate of the armrest. Start by prying up the bottom and the sides of the back plate. Be careful that you don't break the clips on the sides of the back plate. Don't try to pry the top of the back plate straight out because the top two clips will break unless you first slide the back plate down.

The latch will now be exposed. Squeeze the two arms of the latch to move them out of the mounting holes and remove the latch. Set the broken latch aside.

Step 2 – Install new latch

Line up the arms of the new latch with the appropriate mounting holes in the armrest. Then insert it so that it snaps into place. Press the back plate into the armrest so that it, too, snaps into place. Test out the new latch and make sure every thing is in order. Then you're all done.
