Audi Q5: Gasoline Recommendations

Want maximum performance when it comes to your Audi Q5? Then you'd better start re-fueling with the best fuel grade for your car.

This article applies to the Audi Q5 (2009-present).

Sometimes, there really isn't such a thing as second best. Yes, some other alternative may exist to get us by for a short while, but rarely will it ever serve our needs completely or deliver maximum results (certainly not comparable to the results we would have achieved if we had chosen the best option available to us). It seems the same is true when it comes to the type of fuel you use to fill up your Audi Q5. Fuel grade does matter. Keep reading to see which fuel grade is best for your Q5, and which ones should be avoided altogether, or at least whenever possible.

Premium Grade Fuel

When it comes to octane grades, Audi is pretty clear and straightforward about the preferred choice: Premium grade fuel (91 and up). Audi Q5 owners stand in agreement with the company, saying premium grade fuel is the best option for this beautifully crafted vehicle.

Running on Regular or Low-Grade Fuel

Your Audi Q5 will run on regular. However, your car's computer will need to adjust to the lower grade of fuel. You are highly likely to experience a loss in fuel economy, degradation of your timing belt (over time) and knocking sounds. Your fuel lines could also be negatively affected. Many Audi Q5 owners also warn of possible engine damage in the long run. Stick to premium for the best in performance.

Common Questions

How do I drain regular (or simply bad) fuel from my tank?

You can use a hand pump to siphon out the gas, or you can pay to have it professionally cleaned and flushed.

Is the cost of premium fuel worth it?

Yes, premium fuel costs more. However, the increase in cost is typically only 30 or so cents per gallon. If you fill up your tank, this could equate to an extra $5 to your total bill, which isn't much considering you'll be providing the best gas for your Q5's overall engine performance.

Which grade of fuel do most Audi owners use?

Across the board, the answer is typically "premium." A few brave Audi owners have admitting to using "mid-grade" fuel, but only premium is recommended for maximum performance.

Common Issues

Knocking Sounds

If you start to hear knocking sounds as a result of using regular fuel, then it's highly recommended that you drain your tank immediately, and then re-fill it with premium fuel. If your tank is not completely full when the knocking sounds occur, you may also opt to add in premium fuel. Going forward, it's highly recommended that you only use premium fuel.

Reduction in Gas Mileage

Premium fuel offers an increase in gas mileage, so switching to regular will likely result in a greater number of trips to the pump. Switch to premium and you should see an increase.
