This article applies to the Audi Q5/Q7 (2008-Present).

Is your roof rattling? Sadly, the problem is not at all rare, and many Q5/Q7 drivers experience the loud rattles or vibrations that stem from the roof. The problems have generally been rooted in the whole construction of the panoramic roof, with issues on the frame itself or some of the mounting locations. The problem has been so wide spread that a couple of Technical Service Bulletins have been released for it. Instead of just wondering why the problem is there, here are a few things that can cause the vibrations, along with the proper procedures to fix them.

Audi Q5/Q7: Why is My Pano Roof Rattling?

Materials Needed

  • Lube
  • Foam pieces

Step 1 – Check the sunroof railing

They might be dry.

First and foremost, check the railings and lubricate them. The rattle may be coming from too much friction on the railings themselves, and if that is the case, this will solve the problem. However, if the issue persists, then contact your local dealership and bring up TSB: 2022733/2 to your local dealer. They may have to lubricate the entire sunroof assembly to remove the vibration, which, if covered under the warranty, will be free of charge.

If that does not solve the problem, then continue to Step 2.

Pro Tip

Since this issue does have a lot of attention from Audi already, it is best to find a reputable dealership and keep in contact throughout the entire process of repairing this issue. That way, if lubricating the railings fails to work, quickly bring the vehicle in to have the entire sunroof serviced.

Step 2 – Check the sun shades

The clips may be too loose.

If your car has sun shades or blinds, check the assembly. It may be too lose, causing it to rattle while the car is in motion. If the assembly is too loose, remove them and place some foam underneath. Then tighten them back into place.

If the sun shades were not the issue, then proceed to Step 3.

Step 3 – Bring the car in if still under warranty

There may be a manufacturer's issue.

As mentioned before, issues with the panoramic roof is becoming synonymous with the Q5/Q7. There have been reports of the entire frame needing to be replaced, realignment of the glass, or areas around the assembly need to be dampened. If your car is still under warranty, there should be no harm in bringing it in. There have been several TSBs, such as 2038029/1, sent out that are directly related to this issue, so there is a good chance the service technicians can repair the problem.

Pro Tip

If your vehicle is out of warranty, then I would recommend looking at ways to dampen the sound. This can be done be placing foam behind the B-pillars and specific contact points listed in the TSBs.
