This article applies to the Audi Q5/Q7, A3, A4 B7, A4 B8, A6 C5, A6 C6.

An online vehicle identification number (VIN) decoder is a complimentary, speedy and accurate tool that allows you to check and obtain vital information about your Audi, including when and where it was manufactured, its current physical condition (based on previous maintenance and collision reports), as well as its model year and trim level. A VIN report also provides a detailed rundown of safety features, including the number and type of airbags equipped in a vehicle.

Decoding a VIN

Quick Checks

While a VIN decoder offers a variety of information, the most important information to look for when selling or buying an Audi is arguably the following:

  • Title data, including the issue date.
  • The most current odometer reading, which would have been taken when the car was most recently serviced by an automotive professional.
  • Theft and collision information, if applicable.
  • Salvage information, if applicable.

VIN Decoder by Position

A standard VIN contains 17 digits, and each digit offers specific information about your Audi.

  • Positions 1-3: World manufacturer identifier (e.g., "W" for Germany and "AU" for Audi).
  • Positions 4-8: Body type, engine type, and safety restraints (seat belts); also contains the base weight and wheel base.
  • Position 9: Authenticates that the VIN number is "accurate" and "valid."
  • Position 10: Model year.
  • Position 11: Plant code.
  • Positions 12-17: Individual serial or production number, which is authentic to each new vehicle manufactured around the world.

How to Obtain a VIN Report

You have two options here: You can either run your report using a free online VIN decoder, or you can contact your local Audi dealer and have them run the report for you. Both options are free, but running the report on your own online will obviously deliver faster results.

Only an Audi dealer can access bill of material information, which contains your engine code. However, the three-digit code that reveals your options is located in your owner's manual as well as on a sticker stamped on the inside of your spare tire well.

Common Questions

VIN reports are updated on a rolling basis. So, as new information becomes available, the report will change accordingly.

The likely cause is an invalid VIN number. Check the number you have entered against the one stamped on the door panel of your Audi.

Will my VIN report show my name?

The VIN report will show both the current and previous title holders of the vehicle. All vehicle owners must be registered with the state.

Does the VIN identify the color of a vehicle?

No.
